Frequently Asked Questions
You Asked, We Answered
I HAVE BEEN DIAGNOSED WITH SPINAL STENOSIS AND HAVE BACK PAIN, WHAT SHOULD I DO?
Spinal stenosis is a condition where the nerves in your spine are encroached by the soft tissue around it. It may or may not cause pain. The pain usually starts from the nerve being impinged; this, in turn, causes the musculature around the nerve to become tight in an effort to guard the area, which then results in increased pain due to further impingement on the nerve. Usually, the person with stenosis walks slightly bent forward, this position seems to alleviate the pain, by opening the space for the nerves to exit the spine.
Your doctor may give you anti-inflammatories, muscle relaxants, and pain medications and/or prescribe your physical therapy treatment. In physical therapy, we can help you by working on the tight musculature to help decrease tightness, which in turn reduces the impinging on the nerves, postural exercises, and strengthening exercises of weakened musculature. The benefits of physical therapy are longer lasting than those of medications because in addition to relieving the pain you currently have, you are educated on how to prevent further pain and maintain your back strong.
I HAVE BURSITIS OF THE HIP, WHAT CAN I DO TO ALLEVIATE IT?
The bursa is a sac laid on the lateral side of the femur (hipbone) and a band of soft tissue called the Iliotibial band that crosses over it. When this bursa gets inflamed, it could be very painful. One way to reduce the inflammation of the bursa is to apply cold compresses to the painful site for 10 to 15 minutes, two or three times a day. It is also very helpful if you lay on the opposite side of where you have bursitis and let the affected leg hang off the side of the bed, this will stretch the Iliotibial band, which is usually very tight when you have bursitis. These are simple to follow suggestions. We treat patients with bursitis in the office quite often with excellent results and will be happy to assist you if you need to.
